Calvin J. Heusinkvelt, 80, of Grand Island, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at Jacobsen-Greenway- Dietz Funeral Home in St. Paul. Pastor Daniel Bear officiated.

Musical selections included “I Wish Grandpas Never Died,” “My Way,” “Peace in the Valley,” and “Hero.”

Pallbearers included Jordan Heusinkvelt, Brady Heusinkvelt, Andrew Mendyk, Devin Herrick, Jim Pursell, Matthew Goertzen, Kelly Faimon,and Broedy Starkey.

A.J. Haller was an honorary pallbearer.

Interment was in the Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.

Calvin was born on December 28, 1943, to Owen and Leah (Ebbers) Heusinkvelt in Lincoln.

He graduated from Hickman High School on May 16, 1963. Calvin was united in marriage to Wanda Ham on August 12, 1966, in Martel. The couple had four children and they were raised in St. Paul. The couple later divorced. Calvin was united in marriage to Shawna (Vollmer) Hemmer on August 14, 2014, in Grand Island.

He built houses for numerous years employed by Scarborough Construction, Golds, Brunswick, and Latches.

Calvin enjoyed working with reclaimed barn wood, making various benches, birdhouses, and cabinets. His hobbies included golfing, hunting, fishing, dancing, and camping.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Shawna Hemmer of Grand Island; his children with Wanda: Tammy Heusinkvelt (Jim Pursell) of Ayr, Tod (Debbie) Heusinkvelt of Dannebrog, Troy (Lisa) Heusinkvelt of Iowa, and Travis Heusinkvelt (Trina Holden) of Lincoln; step-children, Kelly Goertzen of Overland Park, Kansas and Shane Hemmer of Kearney; brother, Oren Lee (Genevieve) Heusinkvelt of Cortland; sisters, Fern (Tom) Sullivan of Cortland and May (Greg) Stevens of Lincoln; grandchildren, Kyndsay (Devin) Herrick, Kassie (Kelly) Faimon, Reagan Rust, Brady (Kenzie) Heusinkvelt, Madison (Dan Leonard) Heusinkvelt, Alexis (Andrew) Mendyk, Jordan (Sara) Heusinkvelt, Alery Heusinkvelt, Shelby Heusinkvelt, and Willow Heusinkvelt; great- grandchildren, Owen, Hazlee, Maxtyn, Abram, Liam, Winsom, McKoy, Blake, Brooke, Brandi, Niki, Eastyn, Ashton, Brecken, Ember, Carson, and Sophia; and step-grandchildren, Braeden Glause and Matthew Goertzen, both of Overland Park, Kansas, Cora Hemmer of Long Pine, and Tristen Hemmer of West Des Moines, Iowa.

Calvin was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Broedy Starkey.
