EF3 tornado tears through Howard, Greeley counties “I don’t know what we’re going to do,” noted Chad Jacobsen as he picked through the remnants of his fourteen-year home just west of Elba on Saturday morning. “We might just doze this thing down and farm it.” For now, he added, “it’s clean-up.” Dozens of reported tornadoes wreaked havoc across Iowa and Nebraska on Friday, April 26th, ripping across the eastern and central portions of the Cornhusker State and causing a great deal of damage, but no casualties.

Former NASCAR driver and racing analyst Kyle Petty will be coming to Howard County on May 5th as part of the annual Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America. The yearly motorcycle charity ride raises money for Victory Junction, a camp dedicated to providing “life-changing camping experiences for children with serious and chronic medical conditions.”

This week, in conjunction with Go Big Give, the Howard County Medical Center (HCMC) Wellness Center will open its doors to the public for the first time. Grand opening activities will kick off tomorrow, Thursday, May 2nd, with multiple fundraising events throughout the day, capped off by a ribbon cutting and Diving for Dollars at 6:00 p.m.

In early April, the St. Paul Pump & Pantry’s longtime staple, Cinnabon, was removed to make way for the convenience store’s newest endeavor: Scoops.

Taken from the files of The Wolbach Messenger Ten Years Ago, 2014 Monday, May 5th will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Wolbach tornado…The tornado struck without warning on Tuesday afternoon and went on a southwest to northeast path through Wolbach’s business district, Methodist church, western residential property, and Hillside Cemetery…Eight People were injured…[Several] businesses [were left] destroyed or needing repairs…Wolbach’s fire department and rescue squad swung into action, with help coming from nearby towns, eight in all. By that night, the National Guard had arrived.
